Question 1

What is the cost of the course, and how do I pay?

Accepted Answer

The AARP Smart Driver Online Course payment varies, dependent on state, with a price discount for AARP members. You may make your payment online using any major credit card through our secure server. The price in all states except for New York is $26.95 for members and $29.95 for non-members. The New York course is $31.95 for members and $34.95 for non-members. (The price difference for the New York course includes a mandatory state fee to report your completion to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles.)

Question 2

If I can’t finish the course or don’t wish to continue it, will I be able to receive a refund?

Accepted Answer

You are able to receive a refund if for any reason you do not complete the course or do not wish to continue it. You will have 30 days from the date of registration to request that a refund be credited back to your credit card account. Unfortunately, we are unable to issue refunds after 30 days and/or after the course completion certificate has been processed. To request a refund, contact Customer Service at 1-800-350-7025 or email customerservice@aarpdriversafety.org. All refunds will be issued within 30 days following receipt of a permissible request for cancellation.

What information do I need handy for registering?

You will need the following information when registering for this course:  1. Driver’s License Number or NYCID (required for certificate of course completion), 2.Credit card account information AARP member number (required for AARP discount), 3. The AARP New York course incorporates an identity verification process. You will be asked to enter a phone number that will be used to validate your identity while in the course. Throughout the course, you will be asked to call in from the same telephone number you provided, and the system will validate the caller ID and ask date-of-birth-related questions which you answered at the beginning of the course. You will also be required to answer Personal Validation Questions derived from the registration information.

Why does AARP Driver Safety ask for my driver’s license number and date of birth when I register for the AARP Smart Driver course?

It is the national procedure of AARP Driver Safety to collect the driver’s license information and date of birth of each course participant. This information is required to guard against fraudulent use of the Certificates of Completion and to maintain the integrity of the program in the view of the insurance industry, state departments of motor vehicles, and state insurance commissions.

How long is this course? What if I cannot finish it in one sitting?

The AARP Smart Driver™ online course (a recognized New York State Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program) is six (6) hours in length. You may complete the course all in one sitting or you can choose to complete the course at your own pace, logging on and off at your convenience. The course will automatically keep track of your progress so that when you log back on, your course will resume from where you left off. New York State residents have 30 days from the date of registration to complete this course in order to receive a certificate

Can I start the online version of the AARP Smart Driver course at one location and continue at another?

If you started the course at a computer in one location and want to continue at another, simply log in using your username and password. The online version of the AARP Smart Driver™ course is designed to be convenient. You may take the course at any time from any location on a computer with an Internet connection.

The online version of the AARP Smart Driver™ course is professionally narrated. The course contains both videos and graphic illustrations of the concepts being taught.

Question 8

Quizzes and Exams: Will those be recorded and graded; can I fail the course?

Accepted Answer

There are six (6) section-end quizzes contained in the course, which are conducted online. The quizzes are graded and must be passed with a minimum score of 80%. The main purpose of these quizzes is to help you feel comfortable that you understand the information being presented and to verify your participation in the course. You will have two (2) attempts at passing the section-end quiz prior to being locked out of the course. If you are locked out of the course, you may call the Customer Service line at 1-800-350-7025 for assistance. There is no final exam.  Periodically throughout the course, you will also be required to participate in quizzes taken over the phone to validate your identity. When prompted, you must call 1-800-350-7025 right away to take your quiz. Please make sure you are in a quiet place so outside noise does not interfere with the testing process.

Will I get an auto insurance discount and/or a reduction in points for completing the course online?

In compliance with New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 215(a), 399-1 and 399-n, and Section 2336 of the Insurance Law, licensed New York motorists may complete an Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program, lasting a minimum of approximately 340 minutes. Upon completing this course and if you are the principal operator of a motor vehicle, you will receive a minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of your automobile and motorcycle liability and collision insurance premiums each year for three years. You may be eligible to reduce as many as four (4) points on your driving record. The DMV computer will automatically note your eligibility to receive the reduction. Please check with your insurance company or agent for any additional requirements for eligibility.  NOTE: The point total cannot be reduced below zero. Point reduction can only be credited once every eighteen (18) months. Points which are reduced remain on a motorist's record, but are not counted by the Department in determining further administrative actions against the licensee. Point reduction does not affect actions mandated by statute, such as license revocation for three (3) speeding convictions within eighteen (18) months and point reduction does not affect suspensions or revocations already in place.

When will I receive my certificate?

You will receive your Certificate of Completion within 5-15 business days after you complete the course via standard U.S. Mail. If you need to receive your certificate sooner, we offer an express service for an additional fee (FedEx – 2 day, Standard Overnight, Priority Overnight.)

Is the Smart Driver™ course the same as the "55 Alive" course?

As rules of the road have changed over the years, so has this course. When AARP began this program in 1979, it was referred to as "55 Alive." But, over time – and with the development of new content – we felt the name "Smart Driver" was more appropriate, so a change was made.

What happens if I get disconnected?

If you get disconnected from your Internet provider for any reason, simply reconnect and log back in to aarpdriversafety.org and start your course again. You can continue the course from where you left off.
